BOUNTIFUL, UTAH - Merrill Marriner Deaton, 98, long time resident of Weston,
Idaho, passed peacefully away on Saturday, March 25, 2000, in a Bountiful,
Utah hospital. Merrill was born Sept. 12, 1901, in Hammond, NM, a small
farming settlement on the banks of the San Juan River, where his father,
Bishop James Lemon Deaton, and his mother, Tamma Arminta Curtis, had been
sent by Brigham Young to colonize and preach the gospel to the Indians.
Grandpa married Laura Stanbridge on June 29, 1927, in the Salt Lake LDS
Temple. They had a daughter, Norma Jean. Laura died when Norma was 5 years
old. He married Emma Frederico on Feb. 27, 1935, in Pocatello, Idaho. The
marriage was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple Feb. 4, 1944. They made
their home in Weston, Idaho, where their two sons, Merrill and Jarvis were
Active in the LDS Church, he worked principally in the Sunday School and
Young Men's Mutual auxiliary organizations. He found great joy acting as
an officiator in the Logan LDS Temple. He attended Brigham Young Academy
(now BYU) and LDS Business College. He was self-employed, operating various
business which included a vending machine business at the time of his retirement.
He served as mayor of Weston and on the local school board.
Known for his garden, he found great satisfaction in planting, grooming,
harvesting and sharing his vegetables. He was proud to boast that he never
grew a weed.
Surviving are his children; Norma J. (David, Jr.) Haslam, Bountiful, UT,
Merrill Eugene Deaton (Terry), Henderson, NV, and Jarvis Raymond Deaton
(Evadene), Serritos, CA; one sister, Arnelda Poulson, Heber City, UT; 14
grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. He
was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Lawrence,
and three sisters, Rhetta, Ruby and May.
Funeral services were held March 30, 2000, at the Weston Ward Chapel, with
Bishop Glade Schvaneveldt conducting. Interment was in the Weston Cemetery.
