Subject: [IL-CIVIL-WAR] Re: Southern refugees

Hello list,
I'm a new member of this list, and I'm particularly interested in
hearing of any stories and research sources regarding Southern Unionists
who were refugees to Illinois (and especially Southern Ill.) during the
Civil War.
My g.g.grandfather, Absalom L. Duggan, was forced to flee Northwest Ala.
in the Fall of 1862 and died in Pulaski Co. Illinois in Dec. of that
year. His oldest son enlisted in the 1st Ala. Cav. U.S.A. in Feb. 1863,
and the rest of the family, Absalom's widow Susannah, and the other
children were given 20 days to leave Ala. Along with related families
named Peoples and Sanders, they fled North and settled in Marion Co.
Illinois in the Spring of 1863.
It is my impression that many of the Southern counties of Illinois were
inundated with refugees escaping from the South during the War. (The
Western Sanitary Commission, headquartered in St. Louis, issued
interesting reports dealing primarily with the refugees coming into
Missouri at the time.) I'd be interested in any newspaper articles or
other material on refugees coming into Ill. and any information on what
relief (if any) that was offered on the state or local level in Ill.
Any ideas or suggestions for research will be much appreciated.
