It appears that a made a small yet significant error in my information
below. The individual I am seeking information about is Moses Bullard, not
Moses Lear. Many apologies for my error.

Responders have located both a 1900 census report where he was a boarder in
Chicago and a death certificate in 1944. If the census report is for the
same person, he would have been about 45 when he married my gr-gr
grandmother five years after that, and being a clerk, not a wealthy man.
She died of stomach cancer a year or so after they married at age 65. She
was penniless at her death, her only asset being a small lot in Morris that
was used to pay her final expenses. The final proceeds of the estate (about
$30) were divided between her children and Moses went off into the sunset
never to be heard from again.

I would like to entertain a discussion on why would Moses have married
Phillipina. This is not only for the sake of her specific situation but for
the many similar situations. I know that keeping house was a major effort
in those days and a man could not both work and keep house and certainly if
there were young children a woman had to be in the picture, hence the large
number of children that were permanently and temporarily farmed out to
relatives if the wife/mother were sick or died. Moses was already living as
a boarder so he had addressed the domestic front, at least as I see it.
What am I missing?

Thanks,
Katie

My gr-gr grandmother was married to four men in her lifetime and I am
writing to request help in information about the fourth one. Phillipena
(Sutter) Cuykendall Washburn Lear married Moses S Lear in either Grundy
County or Chicago between 1904-1907. I only know his name because of her
death certificate and will. I don't know when or where he was born although
I can speculate that he was born probably between 1830-1845 based on
Phillapena's age, or Bena, as she was also known. Can anyone find any
information on Moses? Thanks!

Katie
