Hi Linda,
Actually, this Chicago list did NOT generate controversy/animosity; it was the "Other" Cook list that wanted memories stopped. Pure genealogy, whatever that means was their main goal, but not their only goal. Commercialism, in whatever form had no place on that list. But commercialism was never defined and some members were arbitrarily bounced from membership even for simply telling other members about a site they thought appropriate to genealogical interests of others. Unwarranted hate mail became a huge problem. Some people resented interests of others and tried to bring us all down. I personally received over 300 emails voicing support for a new list.
In the interests of more thoughtful moderation this Chicago list was then started. ChicagoMemories had already been in existence and Arleen so thankfully took on another role. I welcome you to the memories list and hope you will participate soon. I remember you as having helped others in Chicago research and know you are knowledgeable about the area.
This is a great time to remind others that we have no barriers to saying/feeling what we want to express. Unlike some list-owners, Arleen is a free spirit. As long as we don't snipe at each other or do illegal things, Arleen is there for us. Commercialism is hard to define, but if you see a bible on ebay that you think someone on this list will want to know about, tell us! We are not 5 year old Kindergartners and we know what we want to hear about. Sometimes, though, true memories supercede genealogy and should then be voiced elsewhere. I'm sure Arleen or I will steer the conversations to the appropriate place without kicking others off this list like what happened on the other list.
Sometimes this list gets too "quiet". How about if we all name a brick wall and ask the others to break it? Please don't just give a surname with no other details. We have no idea who your family is; we need to know as much as you know, OK? I know it's a busy time of year, maybe others would prefer to wait until January? Let's hear from you!
Beth, please start us off here; Dave, Cynthia, Molly, Bonnie, Linda, etal join in. I know you guys read/write. Let's hear it! Let's ROCK!
