Subject: threaded archives .... another view.....
Yesterday I talked about the threaded archives in the THREADED MODE....
it is the mode that is presented to you when you first arrive at the listing of archived messages for your month of choice....it is a grouping of posts all linked together with the method of reply to that the listers use when replying to a comment made on the list....
But, let's say that you have a real good idea of when the post first arrived in your mail box and you don't want to scroll through all the posts of the gen-newbie list for June! - all 3,000 some of them!!!!! and let's say the you really are not positive of a keyword that might have been used....
what you can do instead,
is to take them OUT of threaded order.....
and put them in straight chronological order....
to do this you click on the little arrow to the right of the word threaded in that little box near the top of the screen...
when you do this
chronological will appear....
click on it...
now before you go over to the REDISPL:AY button,
click on the box to check the
with dates
and
with names
boxes and
THEN click redisplay....
and all the posts for the month that you selected with a check on the previous screen will be displayed in order as they were received
and present to us on the list....
and YOU can scroll down to the date that you think the post of interest occurred...
and look for it...
to read it, you only have to click on the FULL.
this is also how you can determine just how up-to-date the archives are in their display...
if you were to do this and posts from june 30th did not show up,
(but remember, you have to have selected June 2003, and not Jully 2003) you will have to go back and check another time in order to see the entire month...
this is just an indication that perhaps a digest is not yet released or the rootsweb.com system is just woooorrrrkkkiing tooooo hard and might be taking a break....
It DOES NOT MEAN that anything is broke....
so don't be writing to the help desk....think of the system as being just ON BREAK.....or think of it working to send out the regular mail...
Now, let's say that you have started to scroll through this chronological listing and you do find your post of interest.....
but you say, I know there were others that responded to this post...NOW WHAT!!!! WHERE ARE THEY!!!???
well, all you have to do is click FULL and open that email of interest and then
scroll to the bottom of that page and you will see the other associated threads.... all in a nice neat row.....
click on the subject and it will open,
use your back arrow to get back to the first post, etc etc
Now let's say that you have started to scroll through this chronological list, or you were even trying to check out the list in a threaded format....and you just got plain tired of scrolling but you know the keyword...
try control+F and put in the query word and then press ALT+F or press the find button.....
this technique will look only at the words that are on the long page that you are scrolling through....it will not look at the text of the messages that are not displayed....but it might help you go through the 3000 posts of June, 2003!
All of these posts that I have sent about the archives, the searches....and the reply tos......
it all applies to every rootsweb.com list...
(and to some non-rootsweb.com lists as well...)
every one of them.....
a library at your fingertips....
a card catalog at your desk....
the index to the rootsweb.com book in your very own lap!
to some of you this might be old news....
to others it might be spankin' new and
it just might spark an interest in checking the archives...
if there is something that you do not quite understand,
write back to the list....
always remember that if YOU don't understand it,
then there are porobably others who do not understand either and
then the instructions and commentary are not clear enough and
that should be corrected....
hope it helps and you all try to use the archives a little tonight,
play around with it....
so when you realy truly need, it you know exactly what to do!
