Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2004 16:00:14 -0600

I am scanning the results of queries surnames that i know were in our area...

I am only clipping those obits where I recognize some of the relatives

or there is an indication that these are Schaumburg area people....

or from around our area.

I note the number of results in () so that the reader has an idea of the volume that i started with.

Remember that the search produces any obit with the searched name, not just those with the name in the subject of the obit...

Because of this, obits may be duplicated over time.

You will notice what appears to be duplicates as well.

This is because the obits were run on several days and I have not done a comparison to see if they are exactly the same. Corrections may have been made if there were errors.

in the material you will notice that the heading on the obit may not be in the cluster noted in the subject.

it is included because somewhere in that obit, is the referenced name.

EX-BANKER RAYMOND FRANZEN

By William Recktenwald.

Edition: Chicago Tribune

Raymond A. Franzen, 88, a retired banker, lawyer and civic leader, died Sunday in Queens Hospital, Honolulu.

A Du Page County native, Mr. Franzen was born and raised in Itasca and graduated from Amherst College in 1926. He went to work for his father, the late H.H. Franzen, who had founded some 13 suburban banks at the turn of the century.

Mr. Franzen attended law school while working as the assistant cashier at the Itasca State Bank. In October of 1930 the bank was robbed at gunpoint by two men, who escaped with $4,678 in cash.

One of the stickup men who was later arrested was George ``Baby-Face`` Nelson, the notorious outlaw.

Mr. Franzen was threatened with death by Nelson if he testified against him, according to Neil Franzen, his son.

After Nelson was convicted he escaped and was designated as Public Enemy No. 1 by the FBI. FBI agents killed Nelson in a machine-gun shootout on Nov. 27, 1934, near Fox River Grove. Mr. Franzen was one of the men who identified Nelson`s body at the morgue in Chicago, his son said.

Mr. Franzen served on the board of trustees for Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst and as president for a time. An avid golfer, Mr. Franzen had been president of the Itasca Country Club and the Medinah Country Club.

He also had been a volunteer firefighter in Itasca, the village treasurer and a Village Board member.

Mr. Franzen donated 12 acres of land to the village to be used as a bird sanctuary, which is now part of Itasca`s Franzen Park.

In addition to his son, Mr. Franzen is survived by a daughter, Karen F. Bond; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Services will be private.
