My husband and I went to Thebes to check out the old Cemetery for family members last summer and located two Gurst/Gerst graves. They were located on the south side of the cemetery near a ravine, side by side....Anna Gerst born June 23, 1858.....died Dec. 14, 1923. The other was a military stone Adolph Gurst, IL Corpl. IL Inf 5 Div June 11, 1921. Adolph is associated with my husband's greatgrandfather, Luther David McCoy. He shot him... It was an accidental shooting. Adolph was about 15 at the time and a friend of Luther's nephew....the nephew had a new rifle and they were passing it around "unloaded" Adolph dryfired it and shot Luther between the eyes......in front of his entire family. I was told that Adolph drowned in later life, though this is not proven. Hope that this helps. Sue
