The following obituary is one of many from a scrapbook put together by Clara
A. Mahle. Clara Mahle was the daughter of John H. Mahle, pharmacist, of
Mulberry Grove. I will post more of these as time permits plus other
tidbits of information saved within.
The Greenville Advocate
Thursday, August 16, 1894
William Vaughn, Sr.
The subject of this sketch was born at Crab Orchard, Kentucky, March 20th,
1818 and died at his home in Greenville, Sunday, August 12th, at 2:30 p.m.
in his 77th year.
Mr. Vaughn came to Bond county in 1821 with his brothers and sisters, with
whom he had a home until old enough to earn his own living. He was a
resident of Bond county about seventy three years.
August 15th, 1835, he was married to Frances J. McKenzie, who was born
August 3d, 1819 in Tennessee. To this union was born twelve children, two
of which died in infancy, and one at the age of twenty-four years. The
mother died in 1880.
When first married he settled upon land which he had entered some eight
miles northwest of Greenville. This was timber land, which he cleared.
Here all the children were born, except two. Mr. Vaughn had been a resident
of Greenville about thirteen years.
In early life he professed faith in his Savior and united with the
Cumberland Presbyterian church of Union Grove, and afterwards transferred to
Maple Grove where he was for many years a ruling elder in the church.
Mr. Vaughn lived an honorable, upright, exemplary christian life, and was
loved and respected by all who knew him. He was thoroughly patriotic, and
furnished three sons to assist in putting down the late rebellion. William,
Jr., was a member of 3d Ill. Cav and Noah and Thomas were in Co. F, 130th
Ill. Inft.
The second day of October, 1881, Mr. Vaughn was united in marriage with
Eliza Mitchell, who proved a pleasant, helpful, worthy companion, and who is
left to mourn. Greenville has lost a good citizen, those living near a good
friend, and a kind, obliging and beloved neighbor.
The funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church, where
deceased had been a faithful attendant, by Rev. Thos. W. Hynes, assisted by
Rev. W. B. Bruner, on Tuesday forenoon at 10:30, after which the remains
were followed to the old family cemetery, some nine miles north of
Greenville, and there laid to rest in the presence of a large gathering of
relatives and sympathizing friends.
The bereaved widow and family have the sympathy of the entire community in
their irreparable loss.
The obituary also has a sketch, possibly of the William Vaughn, that I will
be happy to photograph if anyone is interested. Ed
