Sandy
Thank you for the reply.
Well, you are absolutely right. The Davis family is hard to track and
with a name like James Davis it is even harder.
The James M[onroe] Davis that I believe that I am looking for was born
in Illinois in 1817. He would have been my g-g-grandfather. I believe
that his family was from Tennessee and that they probably arrived in
Illinois about 1815. I cannot find him in the 1850, 1860 or 1870 census
but I believe that I found my great-grandfather and his sister living
with their aunt. I say believe because the census is a little screwy.
She was 9 y. o. in 1850. The census record can either look like a 7 or
a 9. My g-grmdfather is listed with the correct first name and the
correct age but the name Morris is used for the surname.
I have traced most of the Davis families in Montgomery county in an
attempt to track my Davis family or to assure myself that the ones I
track are not my line. That is my attempt here with James M. Davis in
Bond county.
They were poor dirt farmers and never owned land so there is no
probate.
Thank you for your information. This may help me try and discern your
Davis line when I find them in the census.
Have you tried the Davis Clearinghouse about your line?
Good hunting to you.
