Hi, Nancy,
Check out the http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilclint2/timeline.htm and you'll be
able to track the changing of ownership of the land. Chances are 50-50 that
it belonged to Washington County - they have not been able to enter anything
into the marriage data base yet. If you send an email to their County List,
see http://mypage.direct.ca/m/mid/northam.html perhaps someone may be able
to help you.
You said Sugar Creek was just south of Madison County and that is true,
there is/was a community called Sugar Creek there. The creek continues
southward. Clinton County's Sugar Creek Township is at the southern end of
Clinton County, adjacent to Washington County.
On the other hand, and although the timing is later than you want, there is
a booklet at the Illinois State Historical Library that you could ask to
borrow through your local library, no matter where you live. There is also
a copy at the Carlyle library that is non-lendable. This booklet is titled
"Minutes of the Illinois United Baptist Association, begun and held with the
Sugar Creek Church, Clinton County, Ill. Oct. 10, 11, & 12, 1857 "... This
covers church members drawn from the immediate area - Madison, Bond and
Clinton Counties. Perhaps a descendant might be in there, if they were
Baptists.
Dorothy

I suspect that my g.g. grandparents, Harbert Hobbs and
Rutha Savage(?) might have been married in Clinton
County before it became a county, probably between
1820 and 1825 in the Sugar Creek area just south of
the Madison County line. Which county would be most
likely to have the marriage records?
They don't show up in the IL Statewide Marriage Index.
Thanks,
Nancy Bower
