Somewhere here in the Rootsweb offerings is an explanation for the large
number of clergy found in so small an area. I remember reading that some
men gained passage to America by promising to bring the word of God to the
unchurched people s of the New World. Rich churches sent men who promised
to do this work to America for free or the next thing to it. They were
afforded the title of minister whether they were schooled in this area or
not.
My grandfather served as a J.P. in Clinton county in the 1940's and
fifties - simply an appointed position, yet he could perform marriages while
holding the job.
