Thanks to Laura, Dorothy, and Eileen for a quick solution. The answer is
almost certainly tuberculosis, or at least some related
wasting-away-of-the-lungs type affliction. The sites I previously searched
said "wasting" and "lungs", but never made the connection to TB.

I, too, have a relative that has "phthisis pulmonalis" on his death
certificate. Does anyone have a good description of this? I've checked
several web sites on medical terminology to no avail.
