Henry,

It think your answer would depend very much on which genealogy program you
are using. Being the tightwad I am, I use the free PAF program from the LDS.
I think it would also depend on how you personally like to work.

I tend to keep a separate database for each surname until such time as I have
all the information on the line I'm likely to get (or I just throw my hands
up in disgust), at which time I "import" the information in that particular
database into my "main" database, and delete the old one. By the time I get
to the point where's it time to link the two surnames together, I know the
family line like the back of my hand, so I can easily navigate to the right
family.

To illustrate what I mean, I'll use my great-grandmother Mary Schoo as an
example:

I have her in my main database, along with the names of her father and
mother: John Schoo and Mary Mensing. I have no clue who were the parents of
John Schoo or of Mary Mensing ... and I wanna find out, of course. So I also
have two other databases, one for Schoo and one for Mensing. I have a literal
list of other Schoos I am positive are related to my John Schoo (I have
original documents regarding funerals, marriages, births, etc for these
people), but am clueless as to exactly how they are related to him. So, in my
Schoo database, I have all these documents entered as sources and each person
listed separately with no link to my John Schoo.

When the happy day arrives that I can positively link the people within this
database to my John Schoo, I will import this database into my primary
database, make the proper link to my John Schoo (simple process), and delete
the old Schoo database (so as not to accidentally add something there at a
future date).

I'm sure others have suggestions that you and I might both find helpful, so I
encourage those on the list to respond to the list on this subject.

Laura
