STRADER REUNION - 2007
The Annual Strader Family Reunion was held on Sunday, August 19, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hindsboro Christian Church basement. A small, but pleasant group of relatives gathered to eat together, discuss old memories, and remember family members. James Duane "J. D." Strader of Hindsboro asked the Blessing and a bountiful meal was enjoyed by all present. David Kent Coy of Decatur announced that 93-year old Aunt Betty Strader Prosser of Phoenix, Arizona had called the night before to let family members know that her son, Thomas David Prosser was recovering well from triple by-pass surgery on Friday. David had also brought along several family treasures to share, including a copy of a recently discovered photo of Vincent and Patience (Stewart) Strader of Hutton Township, Coles County, Illinois, who were ancestors of almost everyone present. David also had the two small livestock record booklets previously owned by his great-great-grandfather, John Strader of the Westfield area. John Strader, who was a son of Vincent and Patience, had kept a record of livestock sales and figures in the two booklets in the early 1900's. Also on display were the two old scrapbooks kept by Merle Strader Drake of Westfield, each containing many old clippings from the 1920's through the 1950's. David also shared a packet of photographs sent to him from Jean Green of Kent, Washington. These pictures had been mailed from Hindsboro to Lavina Elzira (Sears) Pine McCoskey - "Aunt Vine Pine" in Washington between 50 and 100 years ago, and were sent to David after another cousin discovered them in an old trunk.
A special guest this year was Lawrence "L. D." Strader, age 76, a Korean War Veteran, and resident of Knoxville, Tennessee, who can trace his ancestry to a Martin Strader, who lived in Coles County, but who has no known link (so far) to the Hutton Township Straders. L. D. hopes a D.N.A. test comparison will help determine the Strader family relationships. He had also attended a reunion about six years ago.
Those in attendance were: Lawrence D. "L. D." Strader (descendant of Martin Strader) of Knoxville, Tennessee; June (Strader) Crackel of Champaign, Illinois and her sister, Dale and Theda (Strader-Miller) Scott of Arthur, Illinois (great-granddaughters of William Francis Strader, a brother to John Strader); Fred and Betty (Reeder-Fombelle) Harshbarger of Atwood, Illinois (granddaughter of Lizzie (Strader) Hofsas) and her daughter, Becky (Fombelle) Liffick of near Oakland, Illinois and her granddaughter, Molly Liffick of Tuscola, Illinois; and Charlene Williams and her sister, Cathie (Williams) White of Casey, Illinois (granddaughters of Mae (Strader) Drake). Lizzie (Strader) Hofsas and Mae (Strader) Drake were sisters to Alva Curtis Strader.
Descendants of John Strader through his son, Alva Curtis Strader were: Jeanne (Hayes) Strader of Hindsboro and her daughter, Jaye (Strader) Roberts of Kemp; Myra (Strader) Coy and her son, David Kent Coy of Decatur; James Duane "J. D. Strader, his wife, Sabina (Hayes) Strader of Hindsboro, their daughter, Rick and Sara (Strader) East and son, J. W. East of near Oakland, and their son, Eddie and Caryl (Marrs) Strader and son, Carter Strader of Hindsboro; and Dolores (Strader) Dague of near Oakland.
