I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Pam Crawford, and I live in
Wendell, Idaho. I have been actively looking for my husband's family for
three years. Just today, I got a brief biography from a book about Hamilton
illinois. Since two of his children are listed as living in the Quincy area.
I joined the group. The information I have is listed below. If anyone has
any good ideas for me to search.....with..... Please let me know.
Thank you,
Pam Crawford,
Idaho

I have been searching for my husband's grandfather Henry Folca Crawford, who
was born in 1812, in Virginia for several years. With a middle name like
Folca, I presumed it would be simple. NOT.
It also doesn't help that "OUR CRAWFORDS" liked to father children well into
their 60's and 70's. Everyone always tells me that I am missing a
generation, but the only evidence we have to support our dates, are very
respectable marriage and birth certificates for Henry (1812) my husband's
father Jacob Ray(1883) and of course my husband in 1946. We know one of
Henry's sons served in the Civil War. Making my husband's ability to claim
he had an uncle that served in the civil war......a rare statement I think.
We were told Henry's family was extreme Methodists. We know that some of
Henry's oldest children moved into Minnesota and Iowa. We know Henry's first
wife was named Maria. We know that Henry's second wife, was named Sarah.
I have always believed that if we could find Henry's father, we would be
able to finish the rest. So much for the help of a rare name.

Crawford, John H.

one of the substantial business men of Hamilton, and one of its most
prominent citizens, was born October, 5, 1864, a son of Henry F. and Sarah
J. (white) Crawford, the latter being the second wife of Henry F. Crawford.
He was born (Henry) August 9, 1809, and died November 11, 1885, while she
(Sarah) was born April 5th, 1842 and died in January, 1915. The paternal
grandfather, a native of Virginia, moved to Ohio, and there he reared his
family, and died. Henry F. Crawford left Ohio for southern Illinois, when he
was eighteen years old, and located in Wayne County, where he was first
married, and by that union had nine children, of whom two survive to date,
namely: Reuben and Nancy, who is Mrs. Charles Burlingame, both live at
Albion, Edwards Co. Illinois. By his second marriage Henry had seven sons,
and four daughters, of whom three sons and daughters survive, namely :
Ernest, who lives at Beaver Oklahoma, Jacob R. who lives in Montana, Olive,
who is Mrs. William Swigelson, lives at Keokuk, Iowa, Sadie who is Mrs.
Edward Moxley, lives in Boulder Colorado, Jennie who is Mrs. Moses Baum
lives at Quincy, Ill. and John H.
The maternal grandparents were natives of New York who came west to Michigan
and inn 1853 , located to Hancock County, spending the remainder of their
years there. Their names were John and Susan J. (Rogers) White.
John Crawford began to be self supporting after his father's death, first as
a farm hand and dairy helper, and later as a carpenter and wagon maker,
working at his trades some years with contractors. He then was yard
salesman in a lumber yard, and for four years was engaged in the dairy
business, when in 1907 he opened his present popular restaurant at Hamilton,
and has since been engaged in conducting it.
On September 9, 1897, Mr. Crawford was married to Mrs. Florence A. Dennis,
widow of Charles Edward Dennis and a daughter of William and Sarah S.
(Irwin) Moore. By her first marriage she had a son Fredrick W. Dennis of
Hamilton, who married Bertha Prouty, of Keokuk, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs.. Crawford
have no children.
Mr. Crawford is a Democrat and served as alderman of the old Third Ward of
Hamilton 1892-1901. After Hamilton adopted the commission form of
government, was city commissioner for two years, from 1913-1915. In 1912 he
was elected a justice of the peace, and still holds that office. He belongs
to the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he is a trustee and chairman of
the official board. His fraternal affiliations are with the Hamilton Lodge
No. 697. I.O.O.F. in which he has passed all the chairs. He compiled the
first ordinance revision that was ever published in 18895, which remained in
effect until 1913,, when the commission form of government was adopted.
This action necessitated a vast amount of research of the records, and
hunting for others that had been lost, and in this work and the ordinance
revision of 1913. Mr. Crawford did signally valuable service as a member of
the revision committee.
