Harrisburg teen found in Herrin dead from injuries

HERRIN - Herrin Police officers are investigating the death of a Harrisburg teenager found severely injured and unconscious on the ground near the intersection of 21st and Herrin streets Saturday morning.

Published reports of the Marion Daily Republican identify the teenager as Chelsea R. Keener, 18.

According to obituary information, Keener died Monday at Saint Louis University Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Officers responded at 5:09 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 to a report of a report of a young adult female found, according to a news release from Herrin Police.

The cause of injury remains under investigation by Herrin Police and Williamson County Sheriff's Office.

Herrin Police are requesting anyone with information about the incident or who had observed anyone in that area in the early morning hours Saturday contact the department at (618) 942-4132 or sheriff's office at (618) 997-6541.

Keener, daughter of Lonnie and Jennifer Keener, was working at Burger King with plans to enter Southeastern Illinois College to become a registered nurse in 2006.

The Chelsea R. Keener Scholarship Fund has been set up at Harrisburg Unit No. 3 School District.

Funeral services will be at Ingrams Funeral Home in Albion 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15.
