Audrey,
There is no Henry Buckner in the 1820 Census for Edwards Co., IL. In fact, there are no Buckners in the 1820 Census for Edwards Co., IL. You may be thinking of the Henry Buckner in the 1820 Census of Crawford Co., IL which is northeast of Edwards Co., IL. That's the closest Buckner to Edwards Co., IL in the 1820 Census.
In the 1830 Census for Edwards Co., IL, the line for James BUCHNER/BUCKNER is not blank, as you state. Perhaps you got your information from the transcribed 1830 census for Edwards Co., IL in which the line for him on page 9 is blank, but an asterisk by his name refers you to the last page because the age breakdown for black people were different than the age breakdown for white people. Turning to page 13 [transcribed and published by the Edwards County Historical Society] of the 1830 census for Edwards Co., IL you find that all of the black families in Edwards Co., IL [at that time] are listed, viz: TOLLIVER, CAMELIM, BURRISS/BURRESS, BUCHNER, LUTHER and BLACK.
If your family is white and not black, then you can conclude that the James BUCKNER family in Edwards Co., IL [including the marriage to Dinah DANBY is not your line because they were definitely black.
Good luck with your research. I hope you can eventually connect with a BUCKNER line. The research on the German Frederich BUCKNER sounds promising. I know how frustrating it is not to be able to connect your line or to find clues for backtracking your family. So many of them did NOT leave good clues for us to follow.
Terry

Dear Terry,
Henry Buckner does indeed show up in the 1810-early tax list along with his brother Mathias. In the 1820 census for Edwards Co. Henry is the only Buckner that shows up. In 1830 there is Henry and his family and then there is a little bit older woman by the name of Sarah Buckner, she is possibly Mathias' widow. I do not know at this point as my research in Edwards and with this 'new' line has only begun. My KNOWN family and line of Buckner's first shows up in Pope Co. in 1816. Widow Buckner (we haven't a clue at this point who her Buckner husband was) marries William Goodman (we don't know who he is either) about 1817-1818 possibly in Indiana or Ky. as there is NO record of this marriage in Ill. William Goodman dies in Sept. of 1819 and leaves a will specifically stating that 'after his bills are paid, the remainder of his money is to go to David Buckner the youngest son of his wife Delilah for her care'. She was enumerated as Widow Buckner in 1820 and Delilah Goodman in 1830 Pope Co. census, Delilah dies before 1837 as she is not on the 1837 Pope Co. tax list. Delilah and her Buckner husband had three sons James (my line), Leonard and David (my cousin and best friend Betty's line) Leonard married Mary Diarman and died in 1834 in Pope Co., David married Nancy Newton and died in Feb. of 1853 in Williamson Co. my James went to Missouri and lived to be about 88 at his death. James was married in 1818 and had a daughter, we do not know who he married, he had a son by 1820, there is a marriage for a James Buckner in 1822 in Edwards Co to a Dinah Denby/Danby this may or may not be my James. I know that his first wife died as he married Assenath Riddle in 1828 and proceeded to have a passle of kids. We have no Indian in us nor do we have African American, so with that said, there is a James Buckner on the 1830 Edwards Co. Ill. census, however the line is blank, I figure his Dinah died before 1828 and he moved back down to Pope after he married Assenath in 1828, the census taker may have copied his name from the marriage records or tax records and then when he went out to actually count the families he found James to be gone, but the marriage in Edwards does kind of place our family in the known proximity of the Henry and Mathias Buckner family who were known Germans, only further research will determine if we are related or not.
Thanks, Audrey
