Thank you very much for the information. All I had to go on was a letter my
descendent received from his Uncle telling about John Martin's death in
1873-4 killed in a freak accident. He, John, was putting a new wagon body on
and the team of horses bolted runing over him. He died three days later.
Stating it happened in Ewington. Is Watson, Ill near there by any chance?

Dear Mary:

The Effingham County seat located at Ewington was removed in 1859 to
Effingham. The old courthouse was used as a poor farm until it was moved
to South of Effingham in 1880. Most of the town was abandoned by 1875 or
so. There were Ewington papers and copies of these (very few no more than
15 I think) are at the State Historical Library in Springfield. Most of
the dates that I remember after reading them were in the 1840's. The
newspapers in Ewington were moved into Effingham during 1860-61 time
period. You would have better luck searching for an Effingham Paper for
the 1874 period.
