The following notice is appearing on the Web site of the newspaper:
(www.daily-journal.com click on the graphic in the upper left corner)
--------------------------------------
Daily Journal Content Lockdown:
As of October 31, 2003, the Daily Journal will require a username and
password to read certain sections of the newspaper online. Those sections
are News, Sports, Obituaries, Business, Town & Country, Accent, Showtime,
Outdoors and the Archives. All other sections of the website including the
Classified section will be open to everyone.
To obtain a username and password, a current subscription to the Daily
Journal newspaper is required. As October 31st approaches, we will notify
current newspaper subscribers via www.daily-journal.com when and how they
can create their username and password.
If you would like to subscribe to the newspaper click here. If you are not
within the Journal newspaper circulation area, you can donate your newspaper
to the Newspaper in Education Program which brings the newspaper to the
classroom.
USING THE NEWSPAPER IN THE CLASSROOM CAN ENHANCE THE CAUSE FOR LITERACY BY
PROVIDING -
- more literate students who will become more qualified employees, better
informed individuals, more reliable and highly responsible citizens
- a significant means for enhancing self-esteem
- a vital community link that becomes a sound investment in our future.
--------------------------------------------
Now, I don't know about you, but it seems to me that there is NO NEED for
subscribers to the newspaper to read the paper online, and NO NEED for those
of us who don't live in the area to subscribe to a daily newspaper we
wouldn't receive until it is two weeks old(!) just to read a microscopic
portion of the newspaper on a daily basis. Nice of them to offer us an
opportunity to increase their revenue AND save them money by paying for
copies that get sent to schools. They get double revenue and probably a tax
write off for NIE in the first place.
I think this is a crock! I work for a daily newspaper -- a Knight-Ridder
newspaper which is also offering NIE -- and one thing we do not charge for
is ACCESS! We DO charge for downloads from the archive, but not just to see
what is in today's newspaper!
This is a tremendous disservice to family historians whose roots are in
Ford, Iroquois and Kankakee Counties -- members of this list -- as well as
Will County and several others, including some in Indiana.
