Saline Co IL Cemeteries, Vol VI
By SCGS
Brooks Cemetery, Galatia Twp.
NW Corner Section 11 & SW Corner Section 2, T8S R5E. Go West from Galatia on
Route 34 about 3/4 mile, then turn North on gravel road for 1/2 mile to the
Cemetery.
This is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county. It was near the Gasaway
Blockhouse and on the old road from Shawnwwtown to Cahokia, Illinois, one of the
earliest trails. There are many sandstone markers that cannot be read. It is
estimated that there are 200 burials without markers. This property was deeded
to Saline county for use as a cemetery by A. J. and Annie Webber on 28 April
1902.
Recorded by Norman and Lorene Tate and Mary A. Anderson 24 Sept 1974.
My note: There are several old family names here (in the book), Whiteside,
Karnes, Bond, Pemberton, Weir, McCreery, Gassaway, but there were no Brooks
enumerated in 1974 (or Hungate).
