Origin and Early History of the First Baptist Church of Benton, Illinois.
By Judge T. LAYMAN:
If time could turn backward for a period of seventy years we could get a
picture of the organization of this church. On Saturday before the first Sunday in May, 1841, a little band of devoted and consecrated men and women met at the home of T.J. MANSFIELD for the purpose of organizing a church in the recently founded town of Benton. Mr. MANSFIELD then lived on East Street, his residence, a log cabin about 16x18 ft., being on the site now occupied by the home of Harry I. HAMILTON.
The Mt. Pleasant Baptist church, seven miles west of our city, was the first Baptist church organized in the vicinity of Benton, it being organized in 1829. In the month of April 1841, it granted to all it's members living east of Big Muddy river, permission to join and assist in the formation of a church at this place.
The Council organizing his church was composed of two members, Elder S.M.
WILLIAMS of Concord Church in Jefferson County, and Elder John BROWNING of Mt. Pleasant Church. Both were noted pioneer preachers, Eld. WILLIAMS being the minister who baptized Uncle Levi BROWNING, and Eld. John BROWNING was the father of Uncle Levi. Elder BROWNING was the first man to be baptized in the waters of Big Muddy river.
At the time of the organization of this church, the constituent members who
joined by letters from other churches were fourteen in number, namely:
From East Fork Church, Smith Co., Tennessee: T.M. VANCE, O.C. WILKERSON, Rachel WILKERSON and Elizabeth WILKERSON.
On the day of organization the church ordained Bro. VANCE to the ministry
and the following month selected him as pastor. He served faithfully for
nineteen consecutive years, and under his ministry the membership increased
from 14 to 169. All of the charter members of the church have now passed
away.
