Early Divorce Records, Franklin County, Illinois 1837-1875, Carla
Pulliam (1994) cites: 1871: "Your petitioner, Hanna Adams of Jefferson
County, Illinois, represents that Alice M. Adams, the daughter of your
petitioner, aged four years, is restrained of her liberty by Augustus
Adams of Franklin County, Illinois; that one Thomas B. Adams, husband of
your petitioner and father of Alice Adams, gave the custody of said
Alice to said Augustus Adams and that Thomas B. Adams has since deserted
your petitioner and he is now a resident of the State of Arkansas and
that your petitioner is informed that Augustus Adams is now about to
depart from this state and County and convey the said Alice Adams from
this State. That your petitioner has in no way consented to the custody
of the said Alice Adams by the said Augustus Adams and that she has
sought for and has been refused custody by Augustus Adams. She
therefore prays for a writ of Habeas Corpus directed to Augustus Adams
commanding him to bring Alice Adams forthwith before your Honor and to
show cause why Alice should not be discharged and set free. "

Thomas died in 1875.

I question if the divorce ever occurred. Augustus taking Alice M. must
have been prevented... Alice M. shows up in the 1880 census with her
mother and step-father, W. W. WINN. There is a marriage notation for
July 10, 1882 announcing the marriage of Alice M., daughter of Thomas
B. Adams and Hannah to John. T. Heller from Indiana. Hannah had
remarried in 1875 to William. W. WINN.
