Subject: Origin of the Given Name "Byford"

The name "Byford" isn't very common. Most of the occurences I've come across seem to be in Franklin County, including my Byford Hays, and William Byford Swiney. I looked it up on the Internet, and lo, it means "by the ford." Big help.
Does anyone know where it originated, and why it seems to be popular in Franklin County?
Got my fingers crossed on this one.
