Yes, that was a very interesting estate sale. It was sort of amusing to see
the term of "crier"--I sort of pictured somebody going all through the town
ringing a bell......

I was quite surprised that Allen Dugger, who was the administrator of the
estate, did not sign his name anywhere amidst these papers. I do know he
must have been able to read and write, considering the amount of other
business that he had going on in his life. It was also interesting to me
that the Bruce family seemed to have several members that were able to read
and write also. They are cousins of the Duggers. There was a mention of an
A.C. Kirwan(married to a Dugger ) and I have an old letter from a Kirwan in
my files and he could also read and write. It must have been a huge benefit
to be able to do so and certainly job insurance! A very valuable skill that
today we take for granted.
