Jon and citizens of Gallatin Co., IL
By chance I am researching the Storming of Stony Point during the
Revolutionary War along the Hudson River in 1779. At that time Major Thomas POSEY of
Virginia commanded a battalion of the light infantry. The Corps of Light Infantry
was the command of General Anthony Wayne and was especially organized under
the direct instructions of General Washington. The assault on Stony Point was
conceived by Washington and executed by General Wayne. The assault was made
by bayonet alone at night and resulted in the surrender of the British garrison
of 500 men. The then Major POSEY was prominent in the assault and was cited
for his bravery while leading these elite volunteer soldiers. At the time the
action was recognized as a significant defeat for the British and gained the
recognition that American Continental Army had reach a professional level.
POSEY was a recognized leader in this group.
I am also researching the C. SMOCK family of Southern Illinois who came to
the area (Cave-in-Rock) from KY before 1810. They are found in USC 1810 in
Randolph Co., IL Terr. This area was in GALLATIN Co. from 1812 to 1816, as I
understand it, and later Pope Co. and, finally, Hardin Co., IL. My problem is to
further identify C. SMOCK.
