C. SMOCK of the USC 1810 IL Terr., Randolph Co. was not recorded earlier in
this area although his son, Barney, was born 1808 IL. It appears that he and
family came from KY as his eldest known son, Hiram, was born there in 1800
according to the USC 1850 Hardin Co., IL. A search for a SMOCK adult male in 1800
KY with a first name beginning with "C" was undertaken, The only one found
was Cornelius SMOCK in the 1800 tax list of Bullitt Co., KY. Further
examination finds earlier records of Cornelius in Mercer Co., KY along with
Barnabus/Barney SMOCK. Barney and wife, Antje/Ann, had an eldest son, Cornelius, born in
1772 in PA. Barney and family came to KY about 1784 or when Cornelius was 12.
It is probable that Cornelius married while in Mercer Co., KY. He was in
Mercer Co. as late as 1796. There being no other candidates it appears that
Cornelius is our man although there is only circumstantial evidence. I have been
unable to find a marriage record for Cornelius which could help make the
connection, as we know the name of C. SMOCK's widow is Sarah. The fact that C.
SMOCK had a son, Barney, and Cornelius had a father, Barney, could add to the
probability that C. SMOCK was the same as Cornelius SMOCK.
Best regards,
Hugh of Northern Virginia
