Subject: [ILHAMILT-L] DAVIS families in Southern Illinois - errors and omissions
Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 17:20:37 EST
List,
I hope you aren't sick of the Davis families yet. It has been a long time
since I promised last November that I would post more information from my
books and files. I should have repeated the names of the books which contain
the individual county histories mentioned in the biographies. The bios are
abstracted from White County History, originally published about 1855, and
reprinted by the White Co. Historical Society in 1997, and from History of
Gallatin, Saline, Hamilton, Franklin and Williamson Counties, Illinois,
originally published in 1887 by the Goodspeed Publishing Company, and
reprinted by McDowell Publications for Frankfort Area Genealogy Society in
West Frankfort, IL, in 1973.
I see that I still managed some typos even though I edited at 2:00 a.m.
Strange! You are absolutely right - William C. Davis (who is William C.
(Cain?) Davis and not William Cors Davis) had a dau named Rebecca, not Revecca
. My computer is having a ditto (or is it tritto?) problem and JJJosiah
Davis is Josiah, of course.
In the bio of Nehemiah Davis, Sr., I wrote that his wife, Mary Allison, was
of Irish stock. That information came from page 776 of the 5-county history,
above, and should not have been included in the parenthetical element
attributed to David Schichner. Incidentally--David has a lot of well
researched material on this family.
(I see that David has posted some of his information on the List. Thanks,
Dave.)
I copied the "only child" of Henry M. Davis as Ira J. Davis. This
information came from page 873 of the 5 county history [above]. Please bear
in mind, the history (probably written in 1885/86) was published in 1887 and
could not possibly have reported information from the future. Audrey
Jeffries called the subject John Marshall Davis (I don't know why that
discrepancy exists) and wrote that there were two other children, Asa, born
21 May 1887 and Gussie Bell, born 6 Nov. 1888.
Any more comments?
