Hi Everyone,
I recently got an email from one of my JOHNSON cousins concerning Solomon W.
PAGE and his wife Eusebia and their 2 daus. Thyrsey (Thrysa) b 10 Oct 1859
and Sarah E. b 01 Jan 1862.
We would really appreceate any help you can give us about the 2 daus. and
anything you can add to the email below.
Thanks, Virginia
I received the civil war pension papers from the National Archives on
Solomon W. Page, husband of Eusebia Kerbaugh (daughter of Elizabeth Wampler
and John Kerbaugh).
Virginia's correspondant was correct. Eusebia Kerbaugh Page did indeed die
shortly after her husband, and her 2 daughters were given into the custody
of their parternal grandfather, Sanford R. Page, by the Courts.
As a "refersher", Solomon W. Page joined the IL 40th Co A the same day as
our Christopher Cooper Johnson. Solomon's physical description was age 23,
5'8" tall; dark complexion, black eyes and dark hair. Profession:
Blacksmith.
Solomon became sick at Memphis and was hospitalized. He went on furlough
and returned home to Macedonia, IL. He died there on 2-10-1864 of chronic
diarhea. He is buried at the ME Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Eusebia E. Page, filed for a pension in 1864, Pension # 48034. Persons
giving depositions included Major H. H. Hall, IL 40th, Co A; Robert Henry
Johnson and Enoch Johnson. Eusebia was paid a pension up to 9-4-1865.
Eusebia Kerbaugh Page died on 11-4-1865, cause not stated in the pension
papers.
Elizabeth KERBAUGH (mother of Eusebia) and a Katherine JOHNSON (is she
Robert Henry Johnson's wife???????????) gave depositions stating they were
present at or shortly after the children's brith and gave their birth dates
as:
Thursey E. Page, born 10-10-1859 (NOTE in other documents, including the
guardianship to her grandfather, her name is spelled as Thyrsa.)
Sarah E. Page, born 1-1-1862
The 2nd page of the deposition by Elizabeth Kerbaugh was not included so the
date of the deposition is not known; HOWEVER, it would clearly be AFTER
November 1865; which means Elizabeth Wampler Kerbaugh was still alive and
still in Illinois in late 1865.
The children's grandfather, Sanford R. Page, was appointed as guardian on
11-20-1865.
The pension file for the minor daughters, Thyrsa E. and Sarah E. is #93995.
They were awarded a pension of $8 per month, with an additional $2 per month
for each child, on 11-5-1865. until they reached the age of 16.
As Virginia told us, Thyrsa (Thursa??) and Sarah lived with their
grandfather, Sanford R. Page, in the 1870 census. THey were no longer in
his household in 1880.
Maybe someday, we will be able to find out who they married; and where they
went.
Solomon W. Page is buried at the Macedonia ME Church Cemetery. It is
CERTAIN that his wife, Eusebia Kerbaugh Page, is also buried there; AND, I
am BETTING that so, too, is Eusebia's mother, Elizabeth Wampler Kerbaugh.
Elizabeth Wampler Kerbaugh is NOT in the 1870 census, thus she likely died
between 1866-1870, outliving both of her daughters.
The war was very cruel to the Kerbaugh/Johnson families.
