OBITUARIES -- OTHER ITEMS.
James Harris was born in Barren county, Ky., May 19, 1800. His father, Josiah Harris, died in 1810, leaving him as the oldest of a family of seven children, with a widowed mother on a small farm. They managed by close economy and hard work to keep the family together and make a living. In the year 1814 his mother moved to Preble county, Ohio, and bought more land, with but little if any improvement upon it. He remained with his mother until he, with the assistance of his three younger brothers, got their farm into cultivation. When 26 years old he married Miss Elizabeth Elliott. They remained in Ohio three years and then moved to Clinton county, Ind., making their camp in the backwoods a mile distant from the nearest neighbor and the wolves howling around their camp. With the help of neighbors they built a small log house. Here their first son was born Nov. 20, 1829. He was the father of four sons in all. In the spring of 1849 moved to Warren county, Ill., and boug!
ht a half section of land. On this he lived until his sons all married and left him. In June, 1857 his wife died. In 1858 he married again. His second wife lived until January, 1884. In the meantime he bought property at Monmouth which he sold in 1867 and moved to Fountain Green and bought 100 acres one mile north of town where he lived three years and then moved to town. He married his third wife Mrs. Maria Martin, in January, 1885, and lived with her in Ft. Green until his death which occurred at midnight, Feb. 28th 1889. He died of congestion of the lungs. He was not confined to his bed more than three days before he died. His age was 88 years, 9 months and 11 days. He had been a devoted and consistent member of the church for more than 65 years. The funeral took place from the M. E. church on Saturday morning March 2d; services by Rev. Souders, of Carthage, burial at the cemetery north of town.
