Subject: Linkage of SMOCKs of IL: (after1810) to SMOCK of KY (before 1810)
Date: Sat, 8 Mar 2003 09:41:49 EST
In tracing my SMOCKs back from IL to KY the linkage is in the USC 1850 Hardin
Co., IL in which Hiram, b. 1800, son of C. and Sarah SMOCK, shows his place
of birth as KY, his younger brothers, Barney (1808) and Alfred (1810), show
as IL. This strongly suggests that the family moved from KY to IL some time
after 1800 and before 1808.
A search was made for C. SMOCK in the USC 1800 KY. There were no C. SMOCKs
but there was a Cornelius SMOCK in Bullitt Co., KY with family. This
Cornelius (b. 1772 PA) was the son of Barney (Barent) and Antje (Cozine)
SMOCK of Mercer Co., KY. Several Mercer Co., KY records cite Cornelius as an
adult before 1800.
A check was made of the USC 1810 KY for Cornelius and he was not found. It
was found that a number of Cornelius' siblings went north to IN. While there
were Cornelius SMOCKs in IN, none was old enough to be Cornelius, b. 1772.
As it currently stands, the evidence seems to support C. SMOCK of IL =
Cornelius SMOCK of KY. If so, this line can be traced to the SMOCKs of NJ
and the progenitor, Hendrick Matthyse SMOCK.
Looking for more data on Cornelius SMOCK in either KY or IL.
Best regards,
Hugh
