Hello all a good friend emailed me this info and I noticed Geneseo IL in the info so I thought Id pass on in hopes it might help someone.............Robin Pardus
Here is a message I emailed to Lorna Zabeleta (in NY) on Dec. 31, 2003. Lorna is related to the Smead's of Wardsboro. Apparently there are NO Smeads buried in the Smead cemetery in Wardsboro.

A History of Wardsboro, VT by C. S. Streeter. Published by Phoenix Publishing, Canaan, New Hampshire. Copyright Edith Putnam Streeter, 1980. I have typed below the information about each person buried in the FAIRBANKS or SMEAD CEMETERY as listed in the Streeter book, named above. Notice that no SMEADs are listed.
PAGE 75:
The FAIRBANKS, or SMEAD CEMETERY, is located on the farm of Frank ROSEBERRY and is a very early one. It is enclosed by a stone wall on all sides, with an iron gate on the west side. This is one of our most neglected burial places. A few years ago, a group of interested people, got up a "bee," and cleared the cemetery of brush and trees. Nothing has been done since and the underbrush is again taking over.
Here were buried many early and prominent citizens of Wardsboro, among whom were Colonel Abner and Martha HOLBROOK;
Jacob and Mary (STACY) HASKINS;
Thomas and Elizabeth BOGLE;
John and Eunice RAMSDELL;
Hon. Pearley FAIRBANK;
Deacon Drury and Lucy (Holbrook) FAIRBANK;
Joseph and Lucy (Rice) TWITCHELL;
Nathaniel and Sarah FITTS;
Miles and Tryphena KNOWLTON;
Solomon and Mary PARK;
Simeon HAMMOND;
Joseph and Hannah WHITE;
Peter WHITE;
Henry and Nancy WHITE;
Peter and Charlotte (Holbrook) HAMMOND and many others. Many of the gravestones here are broken, lying flat, or partly tipped over. Surely, these old residents deserve to have thir final resting place given some care.

Austin BISSELL, son of Ozias, Jr., was born in September 1787 at Bolton. He married Clarissa STACY in 1810, she died in Wardsboro on August 12, 1862, age 69 and was buried in the SMEAD CEMETERY.
PAGE 111:
Thomas BOGLE, the Revolutionary soldier and pioneer settler, died Aug. 16, 1826, and his wife Elizabeth (FULLER) BOGLE, died Aug. 22, 1859, both are buried in the FAIRBANKS or SMEAD CEMETERY.
PAGE 122:
Nathianel FITTS died June 13, 1849, age 92, Sally, his wife, died April 18, 1837, aged 70. Both are buried in the FAIRBANKS or SMEAD CEMETERY.

Charlotte HAMMOND married Harrison KING on Dec. 3, 1840;
Caroline HAMMOND married Alfonzo BILLS of Troy, New York, April 18, 1840;
Martha and Charlotte moved with their husbands to Geneseo, Ill., and were living there in 1858. Carolone and Alfonzo resided in Troy, N.Y.;
Charlotte (HOLBROOK) HAMMOND, wife of Peter, died in Troy, N.Y., in 1866 at the home of her daughter Caroline. Soon after this, Peter HAMMOND left for Illinois to make his home with his son Joseph and family.
A story about Peter HAMMOND that has been handed down through the generations is that before leaving for the west he dug a grave for himselfe in the FAIRBANKS, or as it is now known, tthe SMEAD CEMETERY, beside that of his wife Charlotte and carefully lined it with brick to prevent it from caving in. With a pair of oxen he drew one or two large, flat stones for a cover so that all would be in readiness when his body would eventually be brought back here for burial. He died in Illinois on his 102nd birthday, April 9, 1878, and was buried here, as was his wish, beside his wife.
