Looking for information on Thomas East, who was in Jackson County, Ill., by 1818 and died after 1860. His wife was Delilah ? According to 1850 and 1860 censues, he was born in South Carolina about 1799.

But, according to bio from Jackson County, he was born in France and stowed away on a boat in 1801. According to the listing in the 1870 Census for his son, James P. East, he was born in France.

Where's the truth?

I know of 4 children--James, my GGgrandfather, John Jefferson, Singleton, and Lucinda Ellen.
