Pat,
I would suspect Joseph HAWKINS (1824-1912) is s/o John HAWKINS (1788-1879) and
a prev. wife,
before he mar. Amelia DAVIS in 1834. Do you have 1830 Fayette Co., IN census
?

The 1840 Fayette Co., IN census does not have a 16 year-old, but perhaps Joseph
was
working on a farm nearby...
