I have a Mary Louise HARTLEY, born 1827 in Ashe County NC, died 1919 in Jefferson County. She is buried in the Old Shiloh Cemetery.

Her first husband was a James SPEARS. She had at least one daughter with James, Malinda Jane, who stayed in NC [later in VA] with her maternal grandmother.

The information I have on her second husband is that she married James Rufus MAYS on May 1857 in Jefferson County. He was born about 1824 and died between the 1860 and 1870 census. I have been told that she applied for a civil war pension but do not know if she applied on the first or second husband.

James SPEARS was out of the picture by the 1850 census. On the 1860 census for Mt Vernon, she had three children that were born before the 1857 marriage date I have been given.

I need to know if there are others researching this MAYS family. I also would like to know if there is a marriage record of James and Mary.
