Subject: [ILJERSEY-L] Jerseyville question - Germans from New York
Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1999 10:02:22 EST

Does anyone know why Germans from New York would have come to Jerseyville in
the early 1880's? Were there recruitment efforts to bring people to the area?

The families I am interested in from Jerseyville were the SCHMIEDER and
BERTMAN families. Charles SCMIEDER was reported to have formed a business in
Jerseyville under the name of Trepp and Schmieder - later changed to Schmieder
and Barnett. He apparently died in 1890 at the age of 37 (but he is not in
the death index -- any ideas on where else to look for his death??). I have
no idea why he would have come from New York (lived there for about 10 years)
to settle in Jerseyville. His daughter Theresa married John BERTMAN who
founded BERTMANs Department Store in Jerseyville.

Any ideas on where to look? I would love to read something about this.
