Hello, I just read your note and the answer you got from another relation. Balfour Cowen of Jersey City was my great grandfather. He lived and died in Virden, Ill. My dad was the son of his daughter Blanche Balfour Cowen and Richard W. Hill. I am in the process of researching the Cowen family. You would not believe the people this family is related to. I have found out a whole lot of interesting information about them. Dad once told me that we were related to Grover Cleveland and sure enough, he was right. Grover is a family name and we are related to the Cleveland family. I have gone back as far the Massachusetts colonies where Zachariah Cowen married Mary Titus. I have traced back a little further on Zachariah but Mary Titus seems to end in Massachusetts. Zachariah's father is Zechariah Cowen and he married a a Zeruiah Streeter. Balfour married an Amanda Bartlett which opened up a whole new family of many names. There are Vincent's, Downer's, and many more. I!
also found out that the original name was Cowing and changed to Cowen. From what I have gleaned from some of the sites I have been in, there is a good chance that the Cowing's were Scottish, but Jewish in descent, also ran across a hint of Muslim ancestry. It will take me forever to round up everybody and get a comprehensive family tree together. There is a good chance that the Cowen's were also connected to the early Plymouth colony settlements. Mary Titus was definitely living in one of those settlements. So it will be a long and tedious search. If you would like to correspond with me, please do. The more family I can find, the better. Your cuz maybe, Vivian
