I use to check out this page for info/help, now all one can mostly see is who's fussin' and flaming one another. It's simple! Personal issues/problems shouldn't be aired via Genealogy Newsletter. So how about getting back to genealogy?PLEASE?

I miss the "good-ole days" of an actual newsletter with people helping people............

Very well put, Marilyn. Don't feel too bad about Rodney's non-response, he
has never answered my queries as well.

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.

Classification: Query

Message Board URL:

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ig.2ADI/1134.1

Message Board Post:

Ian and others who think they have the whole story,
Mr. Noble has completely misunderstood the intent of my message and has not
reported all the facts. I hope to try and do that here without writing an
entire book (thought this is a very long message). Sorry.

The reason I even mentioned copyright to Mr. Noble is it seemed odd that he
would not include the links on his board messages and instead ask people to
contact him, but when he answered he explained. I *did not* accuse him of
violating copyright as he has indicated. He did not include my entire
message with his post of 14 Apr 2004, which by the way, is a violation -
that was my message to *him,* not to be posted onto another board. That is
against all rules and regulations of Ancestry and Rootsweb. You do not take
someone's message and post it without the permission of the poster. That is
just like I cannot go into Rodney's message and change any of the content -
the content of messages belong to the poster and no one should change them
or post them to any forum. However, I am able to delete his recent message,
which I did. However, that also deleted the two responses to his message.

Now, the main reason I wrote to Mr. Noble in the first place is because
there were two messages from the same person during a span of two weeks
asking for the URL. As the admin of this board and others, I was concerned
that maybe this gentleman's message had not been answered (since I saw no
posts from Mr. Noble as follow-up), so I wrote and asked him, first, if he
was receiving the messages because I had noticed one gentleman had written
twice for the URL. Then I asked him why he didn't post the URL in the
messages he posted on the board - I asked if it was a copyright problem and
while you can distribute this information for *personal* use, you can't
repost the information. He answered by telling me he likes to "monitor"
which projects people are asking about and he did, indeed answer the people
- off list. Then he started talking about removing all links since I had
accused him of violating copyright. Well, that is simply not true. What he
read into the message was not th!
e intent and I wrote him immediately and apologized if he got that
impression - and tried to explain why I had ever mentioned copyright.

I HAVE NO IDEA whether the material he is transcribing is under copyright
since I have never seen it. First of all, transcribing tombstones and
reprinting public record facts cannot violate anyone's copyright. Printing a
book that is still under copyright is not allowed, but it is UP TO THE
COPYRIGHT HOLDER to complain, not ME! I am not the copyright police. I do,
as admin of the board, need to be aware of copyright and if someone posted
something that I was aware was under copyright, then I would be obligated to
remove that. However, Mr. Noble has posted all of his information on a
personal website, from what I have been able to gather from people who have
written to me, and it never was - and never will be - up to me to determine
if what he has done violates copyright. From the sounds of it, it wouldn't.

This has been a complete misunderstanding of my message and for Mr. Noble to
remove his web pages after all the work he and his brother have done is a
real shame. You are absolutely correct - he has every right to put whatever
he wants on his website. As I said, I didn't even know what he was talking
about when he said he would remove all links, since *none* of those links or
URLs were on the message boards. I had to ask someone who wrote to me to
please tell me what those links were.

I do hope you and other researchers can convince Mr. Noble to make that
information accessible again. As long as he is certain he has done nothing
wrong (and he appears to be quite certain he has not violated anyone's
copyright), then he should post anything he wants!

I, unfortunately, cannot convince him, no matter how many e-mails I have
sent, that I did not mean what he thought I did, and that even if I did, I
have *no authority* over what he posts on his own sites. If he thought I
accused him, he should have either told me I had no right to do that or
ignored my message! I don't even know if he is reading the messages I have
sent to him. Maybe you and/or others can convince him that he has
overreacted and to put his web pages back up!

In retrospect, I should have written the person who asked twice for the URL
to see if he had been answered! Had I known Mr. Noble would completely
misunderstand my message, I surely would have done that.

I will leave this message up for awhile so you and Bev (the other poster
whose message was deleted because it was attached to Mr. Noble's post) can
see it - I will try to write you individually also. Then I will remove it
since the purpose of this board is not to explain how and why messages are
interpreted.

I hope this explains better what happened. You are welcome to write me
directly if I haven't answered all your concerns.
Regards,
Marilyn Gouge

Since Marty wants to get into specifics as to why I have never
responded to his emails I can explain it. Last year Marty and I were
exchanging a number of emails. Apparently he did not like my response
to at least one email because he put me on his "unsolicited" email list
and my email was returned. From that point I I took that to mean that
he wanted no further correspondence with me.

Rod if I did it was purely an accident and I apologize. I'll check my lists.
