Could this be your Columbus, from the SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX?

RICHARD C CHIDESTER b 09 Sep 1897 d 15 Nov 1974 (V); zip code of last residence: 90640 (Montebello, Los Angeles, CA) ... SS card issued: California

The V means the death was verified by someone like a family member (as opposed to P, for proven by death certificate. )

Not enough info to sort our your Wm. from the dozen or so in 1900 census.
