Subject: [ILJODAVI-L] Fever River question

Fever River was the original name of the Galena River, from the early days
of settlement.
It is considered that Galena was first settled in 1823, and that whole area
was pretty unorganized, I would guess, even in 1827, though Galena and some
of the other mining towns had built up a bit. I am not sure how organized
the cemeteries were by then. It is possible, considering the early date,
that it might be difficult to find a stone. Galena city cemetery would have
some early burials but the cemetery's condition over the years was not
preserved particularly well, and many of the stones, I think, disappeared,
or I had also heard that the ones that were misplaced or broken had been
stored somewhere. This is Old City Cemetery, in the center of town, and
they quit using that in 1853. I believe some restoration has been done to
that in the past 10 years, but don't know the details. I have seen some
lists of burials there, but do not know whether they were done after the
cemetery had already declined, or whether they were collections from
earlier.
