Hi Rose,
Yes, I dropped the over 100 age category on the 1830 census, because we had no one in that age grouping. The introduction gives the definition for each column on both
the 1830 & 1840 censuses.
The 1840 census age statistics stop with the last column that has a positive number.
In other words I didn't fill with zeros. The slave and free black categorized in the "other"
column rather than have separate columns. This was in the interest of fitting on one
line and readability. I think I dropped the employment category of seagoing ships, because we would not have anybody in that employment.
As to the Bates family. I am very interested in the early Bates family who were pioneers of this area. Moses Bates died in Galena around 1828. His children included David G., Virginia (m1) Moses Swan, Penelope Margaret Pope m Dr. Horatio Newhall. Moses D. Bates founder of Hanibal, MO may also be a son. And a Jefferson Bates is mentioned
here as captain of a keel boat. A Nehemiah Bates may be a relative of this family.
I am not a descendant of the Bates family.
