>From Who was Who in Hanover, Illinois by Terry J. Miller
Stephen Jeffers was born September 20, 1820 in Broome County, New York and was the son of Stephen and Cynthia (Coborn) Jeffers. In 1839 he met Julia Maxwell on the immigrant train heading West and later married her on February 14, 1844. Five children were born to this union: George, Perry, Albert, Willard, and Ella. The Jeffers settled in Hanover in 1839, when the village was still called Wappello. In 1851 Stephen constructed the United Presbyterian Church, the first church building in the village of Hanover. He became postmaster in February 1862 and continued at that work until September 1862 when he resigned and joined the army. Stephen served in the Civil War as a major with the Ninety-sixth Illinois Infantry. He became one of the first village trustees when Hanover was incorporated in 1877 and he served as mayor from 1882 until 1883. Stephen owned over 1300 acres of land in Hanover township. Stephen died December 9, 1897 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
