While still at the Mormon Winter Quarters encampment near Omaha, Nebraska, Thosar Owen was elected captain of the company on June 26, 1849.

After deciding to take the southern route to California, the company left Salt Lake City on November 12, 1849. Eight days later, Mr. Fly was elected captain and Judge Owen was elected assistant captain.
