I am sure that it was confusing. My William Henshaw was born in 1724 Tyrone,
Ulster, Ireland. He was a Quaker, he and his first wife Sarah Courtney received
permission to immigrate to Pennsylvania. Sarah died either aboard ship or soon
after landing. William moved to Cane Creek, Orange Co., North Carolina where he
was a member of the MM Cane Creek. He and Mary Hinshaw got into a little trouble
with the congregation because she was living in his home and taking care of his
children without the benefit of marriage. That was taken care of shortly before
1772.
William was is listed in the Revolutionary War for Patriotic Service. From what
I can see the family moved to new territory when it opened. I am not sure
exactly when they no longer were Quakers but no mention has been found of his
children are found in any of the Meeting Records except for those that stayed in
North Carolina.
William and Mary's son Benjamin married a lady of the name of Mary ?? about 1797
and they eventually ended up in Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois. But not
before my gggreat grandfather Jesse was born in Tennessee.
There were a lot of Henshaw/Hinshaw family member that ended up in Illinois and
some came on to Texas. Like I said when new Territory opened up for settlement
the Henshaw's were there. Jesse Henshaw and his wife Nancy Miller settled in
Smith County, Texas a little before 1850, he is listed in the 1860 Census there
also. He is then found in Bell County in the 1870 Census but died about 1875.
Nancy Miller Henshaw moved on to Llano County, Texas.
Although they stayed in Texas their daughter Nancy Jane Henshaw did not. She
married Robert Charles Snodgrass of Dry Grove, McLean County Illinois and
remained there till their death. Their son Jerome Lee Snodgrass came back to
Smith County, while his grandparents where there. He eventually married Rosella
Carter, daughter of a Baptist minister who served about 30 churches in Smith
County.
The Wood part of my family is as extensive as the Henshaw family. I have seen
some records of the Illinois Wood married to Henshaw's but have not researched to
see if they were my Wood. I have been going in a straight line until I found out
that my Joseph Wood and Francina Herman were also the parents of my husbands
Jenneke Wood. This world gets smaller every time I tried to trace a straight
line back LOL..
Any other questions or information you have I will be more than glad to share
with you. The Henshaw information I mostly received from the Henshaw
Association.
