Hello Louise---There are probably some of my Sivia distant relatives that
have sent names to the Index you mentioned. I have most all, if not all of the
Sivias from Union County, but if it's not too much trouble I would appreciate
your sending me the ones you mentioned. Maybe you could scan them to me, if
that would be easier.
I think that you mentioned that you & your husband were Mormons. My gt-gt-gt
grandfather, John Stokes, who settled in Union County around 1811, was
supposedly also a Mormon. It is so reported in a book called a "History of
Alexander, Union and Pulaski Counties, Illinois", published in 1883 by a fellow named
William Henry Perrin. I have a copy of that book, & in it Perrin states that
a family of Mormons named Stokes were among the earliest settlers there. I
have seen this mentioned elsewhere, although I don't remember where. I don't
remember when the Mormon Church was founded but it was sometime during the mid
1800's, right? John was born about 1778, & died in 1854. I am a bit confused
about the timing of this. I believe he was a Mormon, but wonder when he might
have become a member? Also, how would I go about finding any record of his
membership in the Church? From what I have discovered, his father, also named
John Stokes, came to Virginia prior to the Revolution, & fought in that war.
John was born in Virginia, but after the war the family moved to North
Carolina, & from there the young John went to Christian County, Kentucky, & from
there to Union County, Illinois.
I have what I think is all that the Church of Latter Day Saints has on the
Stokes', but with no mention of any membership in the Church for John. Do you
have any advice?
I would be very pleased to know for a fact that he was a member of the Mormon
Church, & believe that there might be more family records concerning him, if
I only knew where to look.
I'm sorry to trouble you with all this, so don't be in any hurry to reply.
Any advice you might have would be very much appreciated though.
Larry
