Good morning, Joyce---Here is a brief summary of what I have on Lemuel
Stokes:
Lemuel was born Jan. 19, 1877, in Union Co., Illinois, & was killed on June
7, 1907, in Johnson Co., Ill. by an axe murderer named Sam Gould. On March
10, 1901, Lemuel married Ida Elizabeth Howell, the daughter of Wiley D. Howell
& Mahala Ellen Stephens {Ida Elizabeth remarried on July 23, 1912, to Jesse
Green Escue}. Ida was born April 6, 1876, in Johnson Co., Ill, & died April
24, 1954, in Benton, Franklin Co., Ill.
Lemuel's parents were John T. Stokes & Sarah Emily Penninger, & his
grandparents were Geroge Evans Stokes & Nancy Pender. George Evan's father was John
Stokes {John was married 3 times---George was from his first wife, whose name
I don't have}, & John's parents were John Stokes, Sr. {who came to Virgina
from England prior to the Revolution, & fought in that war} & Margaret Young.
I have a lot more on these people, but wasn't sure just how much you might
want. I;ll be glad to send more if you like.
I would appreciate having what you have on Lemuel. I have the names of 2
daughters, Emma Jewel & Hattie S. {who married J. Everett Bundy}, but that's
about it.
