The Franklin Medical School opened in St. Charles in 1842 but was closed
sometime after 1849 when two students robbed a grave in Sycamore to use the
corpse in autopsy class. A riot followed with friends and relatives of the
deceased marching from Sycamore to the Fox River to find the school director,
Dr. George W. Richard's. The angry mob found and shot him and a student John
Rood.
