Not sure if this is the same Smith family but this article does mention
Elgin. It's from Biographies of Kane County (don't know the year of
publication)
James E. Bumstead, M.D., son of Edward and Ann (Smith) Bumstead, natives of
England, came to America in 1836 and met in Troy,NY. Married in Chicago Nov
1841. Edward Bumstead was a ship carpenter worked 2 yrs in Troy and came to
Dundee in company of bro-in-law, John Smith, Jr. and entered Government land
in the s.e. part of the twp, then known as "McClure's Grove". Joined in the
fall by Henry Smith and they built the first frame house n. of Elgin.
The following spring, Mrs. Bumstead, with her father, John Smith Sr. came
west. John Smith Sr. died in Dundee, 1870, age 90.
The rest is about the Bumstead family and the article cuts off (our portion
was about Mrs. James S. Hampton: Saphronia Barnum) right after it reads, "In
the pursuit of his early education James E. was..."
Not sure if this is any help but you might get a hold of that page 571 and
some of the pages afterward to get the whole article.
