Janet,

The photographer Gerlach married into one of the families that I am
researching...Christian "Christ" S. Gerlach was born in Germany in 1856 and
died in 1900 in Elgin. According to the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, his
profession was listed as photographer. So, I would assume that he was in
business from at least 1880 until possibly his death in 1900. Hope this
helps.
