Subject: [ILKANE] Migration VT to IL - Anda ALEXANDER late 1850's

In viewing the lists for ALEXANDER-L, ILKANE-L and VTORANGE-L over the last year or two in search of my elusive A. Anda (Andy) ALEXANDER, I've noticed that a number of families seemed to have migrated from VT to IL in the 1850's, in my case KANE Co.(Elgin, Aurora, etc.) not too far from Chicago.

Does anyone have any theories on this? Or know anything about the development of the railroad lines? I thought perhaps some individuals may have invested in the railroad development and enticed some of the Vershire and other Orange County folks to move from Vermont to Illinois. Or did the copper mines pan out in Vermont?

I don't think my particular branch of ALEXANDERs were Mormon, but they may have had relatives who were who trekked westward with Joseph Smith. Does anyone know more about this? I noticed someone responded to Nancy Nichols query about the HOUGHTONs with this possibility.

Thanks.
