Hi Judy,
I think this would be fairly typical for anyone coming to
Kane county from New England in the 1830's and 40's.
Brothers Rice and Elijah Fay were early settlers in Kane
County from Massachusetts and New York. A third brother
Harrison K Fay came from Massachusetts to Chicago then
up to Racine Wisconsin, then up to Portage and the
surrounding lumbering counties.
They all took canal boats across New York to Buffalo, and
then embarked on a Lake schooner for Chicago and Racine.
It is my understanding that you could also take a lake
schooner from Buffalo to Monroe or Detroit and then travel
overland to Chicago and points north in some type of
organized wagon train.
I believe Darcy and perhaps others have websites about this
migration path.
There lots of this Fay family in Vermont as well that moved
to the midwest in the mid 1800's but the reason was lack of
cheap arable land in Vermont rather than mining problems.

Chicago.

copper mines pan out in Vermont?
